Creative Ways To Stay Active When You Have No Time

Busy. A word we are all familiar with. We live in a fast paced world where the act of being busy is often praised. The busy people are the successful people, right? While being busy can be good it can also make it hard to find time for important things, like working out. Or so we tell ourselves.

I would argue that busy isn’t actually the culprit, but rather a lack of creativity. Staying active is important for the well-being of our bodies and our minds. To be successful we have to make it a priority, and sometimes that requires tweaking habits and thinking outside the box. Here are a few ways to get yourself moving when you don’t have time to work out:

Bike to work

Biking is a fantastic way to get around, and studies show that it’s one of the best ways to stay healthy. Not only are you going to be elevating your heart rate, but you will have a unique opportunity to see your town or city in a new way!

Walking meetings

How often do we take meetings in coffee shops, or in a conference room? Walking meetings are a great way to mix that up! Instead of sitting around a table, why not grab your coffee to go and walk a few blocks while chatting?

Take the stairs

Whether you are at target or at your work place opting to take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator is a quick and easy way to get your heart pumping. If you need a little extra resistance, try taking them two at a time!

Park as far from the door as possible

While that parking space closest to the door might be tempting, especially when it’s hot out, parking as far from the door as possible is a great way to get a little extra movement. Don’t forget that all of these small changes add up!

Stand up more

Research shows that mixing your sitting work time with standing work time is beneficial to the body. Moderation is key, though, as always. Standing all day has its downfalls as well as sitting all day. Some suggest sitting for half an hour and standing for half an hour, but really it comes down to how you feel going through your day! Find your balance!

Drink more water

We’ve talked about the benefits of drinking water before, but not quite in this way. Drinking more water during your day means you are going to have to use the bathroom more, which means getting up and walking to the bathroom! While a small change, this little bit of movement also helps stretch out your muscles and restore blood flow if you are sitting the majority of your day.

Laugh more

This may be my favorite tip. Laugh more. There are a plethora of studies out there that illustrate the health benefits of laughing. Among them the reduction of stress hormones, the working of your abs and the release of endorphins. It’s also cheap, and fun, so get your laugh on!
