So, whether you’re sharing an apartment and need a way to zen-out your bedroom or you have your own place and want a few easy ways to recenter and refresh check out these simple and cheap ways to zen your space.

The first step in bringing a sense of peace into your space is to remove all of the stagnant and extra ‘things’. Some of these things may just need a home, and some of them may actually need to go! Don’t be afraid to let go of things! Clearing space is an important part of making room to calm and balance.

Consider Color

Choosing the right colors to surround yourself with is super important. Studies show that colors affect us on emotional, psychological and physical levels. Colors can change your body temp, your appetite, and your mood! According to the director of Sherwin Williams, the most calming colors are in the blue family, but muted, dusty and earthy colors can also be soothing. Start to pay attention to how different colors make you feel and choose ones that feel right to you. If you aren’t looking to re-paint your space consider smaller things like blankets, pillows, and art that fit your color scheme!

Bring Nature In

We all know that deep calm that washes over us when we head out into the great outdoors. There is something unique and powerful about the earth and the beauty it provides and bringing natural items in from the outdoors helps to cultivate that sense of peace around you. Next time you head outdoors bring something back with you (maybe some drift wood, or a sweet stone) to help ground your space!

Pick Plants

Having a home filled with intentionally placed plants is an easy way to create a sense of peace without trying. Plants bring life and vitality to stagnant spaces. They also help purify the air and provide plenty of benefits for your mind and body. If you are worried about your ability to keep them alive, don’t be! Just make sure to choose a variety that is easy to keep!

Add Candles

Candles are an easy way to create a sense of calm. The flickering of light, much like a crackling fire, is soothing on a subconscious level. Add to that the variety of scents available and you have a powerful calming aid (lavender is great for stress-relief). When choosing a candle opt for soy or beeswax, as long-term exposure to emissions from petroleum-based paraffin wax can be hazardous to your health.
